Wae Lolos Tourism Village Profile

About

Wae Lolos is a tourism village located in Sano Nggoang Subdistrict, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The village spans 10.1 km² at an elevation of 466 meters above sea level, with around 700 residents living across four hamlets: Langgo, Rangat, Tembel, and Ndengo.

Established as a tourism village in 2021, Wae Lolos is home to two main ethnic groups—Mawu and Liang Mboha—who coexist in harmony, upholding Manggarai’s cultural values. Originally part of Cunca Lolos Village, Wae Lolos became an independent village in 2000. Most locals work as farmers, growing vanilla, candlenut, cloves, coffee, and durian as key commodities supporting both livelihoods and education.

Langgo Hamlet serves as the gateway to the village’s nature attractions, including trekking trails to waterfalls like Cunca Plias—the first waterfall encountered and a site of cultural bathing rituals.

In 2023, the village formed the Cunca Plias Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) to manage natural and cultural tourism sustainably. Since then, Wae Lolos has welcomed over 8,000 domestic and international visitors, becoming one of the rising destinations in West Manggarai.

To promote green tourism, the Pokdarwis initiated a reforestation program in 2024, planting 1,000 trees around eco-tourism sites to preserve the village’s environment and ensure long-term sustainability.

Sustainable Tourism and Community Involvement

Wae Lolos Tourism Village proudly embraces a model of sustainable tourism rooted in community participation. The local residents play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and protecting the environment by offering eco-based attractions, locally sourced culinary experiences, and guided tours led by knowledgeable villagers. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the daily life of the community, fostering meaningful cultural exchange while contributing to social and economic development initiatives.
